Belgrade is the capital of the Serbia, and it is the biggest city in this country. Belgrade had very turbulent history, an is one of the oldest cities in Europe. It’s history lasts 7000 years. Area around big rivers, Sava and Dunav vas populated in paleolit. Human bones dating from the Older Stone Age were found in a quarry near Lestane, in a cave in Cukarica on near Bajloni market. Belgrade is the center of Serbian culture and art. Our most famous artists live and work in Belgrade, and more than 11.000 theatre plays, concerts, exibitions,performances and other artistic programs, with numerous guests from all around the world. Belgrade is the “headquarters” of the highest national cultural and art institutions: Serbian Academy of Science and Arts, National Library of Serbia, National Museum, National Theatre and University of Art. Many significant architecture masterpieces can be found in Belgrade – Kalemgdan and Belgrade fortress, cultural monuments, archeological sites with material remainings which tell about developed civilization and culture in Belgrade from prehistory up until today. City of Belgrade is founder of 36 cultural institutions( 11 theatres, 8 institutions of protection, 4 libraries, 13 cultural centers and galleries). Belgrade is the founder and supporter of 11 manifestations (FEST, BITEF, BEMUS, BELEF, International competition of musical youth, Festival of documentary and short movie, October salon, Joy of Europe, Belgrade Book Fair, Film festival in Sopot and Belgrade jazz fest), and helps in organization of other 69 manifestation that are held in Belgrade.
